| With tribunal claims and discrimination awards rising each year, to £3.9m in the year 2000, diversity management approaches and diversity training programs are seen to play an increasingly crucial role in the fight against discrimination in the workplace. UK industrial legislation allows employees to bring actions against employers in Industrial Tribunals on a growing range of issues. As this increases, so does the need for a systematic approach to diversity training and management approaches that ensures that best practice is made available to everyone in the workplace.
An effective diversity policy depends on the whole-hearted – and informed – involvement of everyone within the organisation. There needs to be a diversity management policy that includes formal rules and procedures as well as a positive non-discriminatory working environment. Managers and staff both have their own role to play in achieving this.
Wide Learning recognises that the training required by managers and staff is therefore different and provides separate diversity training courses for each of these groups. Both diversity training courses reflect the requirements of UK legislation and Codes of Practice and are updated regularly to reflect changes in the legal framework. The courses, which are suitable for use in both the public and the private sectors, have been recognised by Sue Johnstone, editor of the Equal Opportunities Review, as an effective method for improving diversity within the workplace.
